Our Players are a dynamic and interactive troupe of people with disabilities.

Led by our Players, a team of self-advocates with lived experiences. Established in 2009, the Players have trained more than 20,000 people at businesses, theaters, libraries, schools, trade associations, nonprofit organizations and corporations to communicate comfortably and confidently with prospective hires, customers and current employees who have disabilities.

Anthony

Disability Awareness Player

Anthony is a longtime Chicago native who currently lives in a house on the city’s North Side. One of his quietly kept secrets is that he loves organization—he likes his home and his room to be neat, clean, and in order.

Anthony is an accomplished artist and teaches community art classes once a month. He is also a dedicated athlete who plays basketball, softball, flag football, volleyball, and swims, snowshoes, and skis with the Special Olympics through the Welles (Gideon) Park District in Chicago. His athletic accomplishments include reaching the finals in volleyball and softball, where he earned first- and second-place titles. Anthony enjoys public speaking, a skill he developed as a Disability Awareness Player and NeurodiVERSED trainer. He believes Disability Awareness Training is important because “I get to teach people to have respect for people with disabilities.”

Abby

Disability Awareness Player

Abby lives in a home in Skokie with seven other women, whom she describes as some of her dearest friends.

She is an artist whose work has been featured in many art shows throughout the city, and she is also the creator of Search’s new Planet Access and Visibility Arts logos.Abby has been a Disability Awareness Player for about six years. She enjoys the role because it allows her to travel to different places and meet new people. Abby believes Disability Awareness Training is essential because “people need to know about people with disabilities, especially at work. It’s important to know how to interact.”

Brian

Disability Awareness Player

Brian is from Orland Park, Illinois. He enjoys spending time with his two dogs Apollo and Meadow, drawing, sports and going on family vacations.

In the summer, he plays baseball in a league called the Challengers, which is designed for people with disabilities. Brian has been a Disability Awareness Training (DAT) Player since 2016 and enjoys meeting new people, working with different employers and businesses, and helping educate others about disability awareness. His favorite part of being a Player is teaching employers and businesses how to communicate and engage with people with disabilities in a meaningful and equitable way. He values showing others the strengths and abilities of people with disabilities and promoting equal treatment for everyone.

John

Disability Awareness Player

John lives in Prospect Heights and enjoys reading, listening to music, collecting records and spending time with family and friends.

He likes being part of the community by going to the movies and attending live theater. He has been part of the DAT Players since day one. John enjoys being in this role because he likes meeting new people and educating them. He believes these trainings are important because the community needs to understand that people with disabilities have a lot to contribute when they are given the opportunity.

Lanni

Disability Awareness Player

Lanni was born and raised in Chicago and later moved to Skokie, where she currently lives. In her free time, she enjoys relaxing in bed and watching videos on her phone.

Lanni loves painting and drawing, and in the past, she entered several of her drawings in an art show—where they were sold. She became a Disability Awareness Player three years ago and enjoys the role because she gets to spend time with her friends and meet new people. “I love it when the audience tells me they enjoyed the training,” Lanni shares. Lanni believes Disability Awareness Trainings are important because they help teach the community to be more disability aware.

Sarah

Disability Awareness Player

Sarah was born in Norwalk, Connecticut, and moved to Kenilworth, Illinois at the age of five. She grew up there before leaving for Dubuque, Iowa, where she attended Loras College and earned her BA in Sociology.

After college, Sarah worked as a General Education Teacher’s Assistant at her church. She later volunteered at JJ’s List, which led to a position as an Administrative Assistant. She currently serves as both a Disability Awareness Player and a Community Education Assistant for Search Inc. Sarah is passionate about reading and writing, and she has been an active member of her local book club for many years. As a Disability Awareness Player, Sarah enjoys connecting with the community. “Being able to show the community that we are smart, capable individuals who have a lot to offer the world like everyone else,” she shares. When asked why Disability Awareness Training is important, Sarah said, “It is important to break down stereotypes and preconceived notions that we as a society have about people with disabilities. Learning directly from people with disabilities allows the community to experience disabilities firsthand. Hearing the stories directly from the players is so important.”

Sammy

Disability Awareness Player

Sammy was born in Wheaton, a western suburb of Illinois, before her family moved to Chicago, where she was raised.

She enjoyed her childhood in the city, spending time camping, horseback riding, and practicing archery with her local Girl Scout troop. Today, Sammy lives in a house on Chicago’s North Side with seven other women. She enjoys going to the movies, bowling, shopping, and especially loves when she and her housemates go out to eat. Her favorite restaurant is the China Buffet. Sammy joined the Disability Awareness Players in 2023. “Disability Awareness Training reminds me of my job as a Global Messenger with Special Olympics, which I did for twelve years,” she shared. She believes Disability Awareness Training is important because “when you are hard of hearing, people treat it like it’s a joke—they think you are lying about your disability.” For Sammy, “supporting people who have disabilities and Down syndrome disorders is important to me.”
