Search for Adventure In Disneyland

At the end of May, a Search for Adventure (SFA) group traveled to Disneyland in California for four days of fun and exploration. A crew of six people supported by Search, along with Search and Toad&Co. staff, spent their time braving rides, taking in the wonders of the park and enjoying the beauty of California.

For many people we support, Search for Adventure trips are their first opportunity to travel by plane or visit another state. These experiences provide a chance to step outside of daily routines, try new things and create lasting memories with friends.

“These trips are important because I get to get out more and explore the world,” Jessica G., a person supported by Search, said.

Each year, Search for Adventure brings groups together to visit destinations across the country, creating opportunities for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) to experience new places, build confidence and discover new interests.

“Traveling, exploring and being able to see the world from a different perspective are important for every human being. Our individuals learn so much on these trips and face so many different fears, and it is just such a cool experience for them,” Kayla Smith, Community Inclusion Direct Support Professional (DSP), said.

One of the reasons these trips are possible is the longstanding partnership between Search and Toad & Co. For more than 20 years, Toad & Co. has helped expand travel opportunities for adults with I/DD, making it possible for more people to experience meaningful adventures and new perspectives.

“There are a few spots that truly scream: SFA! One of them is Disneyland. I felt very lucky to be included in the most recent SFA trip to Disneyland,” Grace Lipscomb, Senior Director of Social Ventures and Development, said. “From the train to the incredible light show at night to Joey meeting Minnie, all involved had a great trip. One highlight was Michael S. getting to eat TWO large turkey legs at lunch! He was very happy afterward. Shout out to Michaela and Ford from Toad&Co., who were incredible tour guides and partners on this trip!”

Beyond the excitement of Disneyland, the group also had the opportunity to experience California’s natural beauty.

“My favorite part of the trip was the scenery and the beach, especially how beautiful the water was,” Jessica said.

Traveling together not only creates opportunities for adventure but also strengthens relationships between staff and the people they support. Shared experiences like these help build confidence, independence and a greater appreciation for the world around us.

“Seeing the mountains and the ocean was one of my favorite parts of the trip, but mainly seeing the genuine smiles on our individuals’ faces when going on the rides and watching the fireworks at Disneyland. It was truly lovely,” Kayla said.

Search for Adventure trips like this is a great reminder of what this program is all about: creating opportunities for people to explore, grow and experience the world in ways that might not otherwise be possible.
